Vidwaan Guru Sri. Ashwin Iyer

ASHWIN IYER was born in Bombay (Mumbai), India and immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1982 with his parents and his brother Rohin Iyer. Both brothers are senior disciples of veteran musician and musicologist, Sangita Kala Acharya Kalaimamani Shri S. R. Janakiraman.  They had their initial formal training in Toronto, Canada under Smt. Renuka Balachandran and Smt. Vasumathy Nagarajan. They have also had advanced training under Shri T. R. Subrahmanyam and Shri T. K. Govinda Rao. The name “Toronto Brothers” was affectionately coined by their illustrious gurus in the 1990s and seems to have stuck to this day.

Ashwin Iyer's concert presentations are intelligent and powerful; his scholarly renditions reflect a strict adherence to traditional patantaram (musical heritage) as imbibed from his guru. He has lent his time to multiple non profit cultural organizations, including establishing Alberta ACTS in Edmonton, and volunteering with Bharathi Kala Manram of Canada. Through his musical activities, he is proud to have played a role in establishing the Carnatic Music presence in Canada and the United States.

He is making a mark on the Carnatic music scene by combining his distinctive style with the traditions of his musical lineage. His contributions to the art form have earned him a well-deserved place among the celebrated musicians of India and North America.
